I've Got A Friend

I took pictures of the students and began a Word Wall that the children can refer to throughout the school year. Currently there are pages (with pictures or without) that the children can use to practice printing who their friends are. This is a great way to use and transfer information from their environment.

As your child writes at school I do assist them with a proper grip on writing tools and can often be heard repeating "Show me your alligator snap". Here is a visual for what we are working towards.

Really? Are you sure?

Have you asked your child what they did today at school and their answer was "nothing"? It seems to be a typical kindie response! Too funny.

Each morning I select a student to take attendence down to the office and that person becomes my number one helper for the day, the line leader, and our circle time revolves around that students name. We talk about the capital letter in the name, its associated sound and jolly phonics action, we identify the remainder of the lowercase letters, we compare the capital letter to its lowercase partner, we count how many letters are in that persons name, print the numeral and talk about its formation, and show what that quantity looks like in pictures and on a ten frame.

That is just a mini glimpse of one of our learning opportunities. Hope this helps to fill some gaps and spark some conversations!

Bouncing Along

Let me tell you, the kids are really excited for Carp Fair! I think some of you are going to be there tonight and others sometime on the weekend. If you do happen to go be sure to check out the building with student entries (think it is by the main entrance). Our class submitted a number of finger paintings, farm colouring pages, and a few family portraits.

We had our first gym class with Mr. Ellis today. The children had a great time practicing their bouncing skills!

Jazzing Up Our Name

Last week the students used regular old Bingo dabbers to add some colour to their name. This is a fun activity to start the year off with; it ensures that the children all come to the table when they have been called to do their "job" and it is a really quick and easy one to complete successfully. Students listened and watched closely to understand that they were to stay on the pencil line and keep the dots close together. Instant beauty!

No David!

Has "David" been mentioned at bedtime or during general conversations yet? For the first few days of school I read (and reread) a book called No David. This little guy makes some really silly decisions during his home life. As with home, there are rules at school that need to be established early on. Throughout the year as we take some mis-steps or make some decisions that need to be corrected all I really have to refer to is "David". Check it out at the Library too; the kids love to read it all on their own!

Next week...David Goes to School!

For All The Extras

Thank you for sending in your child's school supplies and various forms. I also want to thank you ever so much for sending the $20 in as well. As mentioned, the money is for all those little extras in Kindergarten from googly eyes and pompoms to baking ingredients and gift creations! It is appreciated and I try to stretch it as far as I can.

Thanks too to the families that have offered to provide Play-Doh this month (Abel's family, Olivia's family, and Caroline's family). The kids have such a great time playing with it; little do they know that they are strengthening their little muscles as they manipulate it!
